Hi Everyone! I'm confused about how the author merge works now. Yesterday I was
working on the author S. E. Hinton. As usual, her works were spread out across
10 author records. First, I went through all the works and changed the author
to the master record, OL397826A. [I usually choose the author record with the
most works associated with it, unless someone has gone through and added
biographical information to one of the author records, in which case I use that
one.] Then I merged the other 9 authors to the master author record. So there
should be one author record, OL397826A, with 47 works in it, and no author
author records.
However, when you search on "s e hinton", the search results show all 10 author
records with the works still spread out across them. Nothing has changed in the
search results! Each of the links now leads to the master record OL397826A, but
I'm confused about why they all show up, especially since they all seem to have
works associated with them (at the very least, there should be 0 works for each
of them except the master record).
In the past, an author merge would result in only the master record being
returned in a search. I think that was better, since someone searching for this
author only wants to find one (i.e. the correct) record, not 1 correct one and
9 wrong ones, all of which appear to have a few works associated with them,
which is not the case in the database (I hope). Is there something I can do to
make sure the old author records are actually empty, and also that they do not
appear in the search results? I.e., how can I get it to work like it used to!
;-)
Sarah
