248 was last used in 1955. 270 and 302 were both available in 1955.
Common lower end parts for 1955 included:
    main bearing sets
    main bearing caps
    rods and rod bearings
248 pistons were available from GMC as large as ".075 oversize rough"

Starting in 1956 GMC Parts Master Book calls out different (from 1955)
part numbers for 270 and 302
    pistons, rings and pins
    main bearing sets
main bearing caps (only one that changes is the thrust bearing cap)

270 and 302 engines used the same crankshaft (4" stroke).

The serial number does mean its a 248. I don't know if a 248 can
be bored and stroked to 302 or not.

The tiny bit I know about GMC InLine 6 bangers tells me the
stamped in
digits will tell you the displacement so if the stamped in
serial
        number begins with " 248 " it's a 248 C.I.D. engine no metter
what B.S.
the seller says , what will bring a higher E-pay price ? . you
figure
        it out .

BTW : a 248 is still a great engine and has gobs more power and
spped
than any Chevy InLine 6 Banger....
