Now that the sick feeling has somewhat subsided, I'm ready to start asking
questions about a major engine issue. Driving the truck this morning (engine
is '54 235) when, after about a 40 mile journey, I was coming back into town
going about 30 mph when it started making a loud "clanking" noise. I
immediately thought it broke the fan belt and the belt was hitting the inner
fenders, etc. Stopped the truck immediately. Belt was ok, no outward signs of
any problems. Checked the dipstick and my heart sank. Major water in pan.
Felt the radiator cap and it wasn't as hot as it should be. Removed cap and
radiator water way low.
During the trip, the temp gauge read a steady 180-185 degrees and the oil
pressure was about 30 to 35lbs once the engine was good and hot. Truck ran
beautifully for the entire trip at speeds of about 50-60mph. This engine was
rebuilt about 2000 miles ago and I pretty much baby it as far as checking all
fluids, changing oil, etc. Just changed the oil about 200 miles ago and the
old oil looked fine - no trace of water.
Any opinions on where to start and how bad the damage might be?
Thanks for all your help. I'll go back to crying now!
