My experience is that it depends on the level of show you go to. Most of the
local shows around north Texas the judges are primarily looking for nice paint,
clean engine compartment, nice bed, clean undercarriage, etc. I've done some
thing to mine that aren't purely stock (235 instead of a 216, etc.) but most of
the local guys are that detailed. I've won lots of shows with my truck, I
think mainly because it is clean and it reminds folks of their grandpa, or dad,
or uncle who used to drive these vehicles!
But if your goal is to compete at sanctioned events such as the World of
Wheels, etc. then the requirements are much more stringent.

I am trying to build a show truck...a complete and total restoration.
However, I am being challenged as you might imagine. Fortunately, my "driver"
is running fine, looking good, and I love it. In short, I need to know what
judges look for. I have never had anything judged so I have no clue. For
example, the battery box is toast so I need to put on a repop or find a good
used one. The question then is can I get away with bolting it to the frame or
must I use rivets as original? The frame around the gussets is pretty badly
eaten up with cancer. I can fix it and strengthen it but will a judge ding me
for the re-enforcement? I plan to paint the frame Eastwood's chassis black
satin. Is that close enough or will I get dinged if it isn't quite glossy
enough? I plan to replate hood hinges etc but would a cadmium paint be
acceptable? In other words, how picky are the judges? How stiff is the
competition? Do you simply gain points by being exact or is being exact
critical?
I would love to win but if I can just make a respectable showing I will be
content.
