No. I put 2 coats of poly on all sides and ends before installation.
Finished to a nice rich golden color.

Another option is to use a hand held power planer to recess the metal
strips so just the hump of metal is slightly above the boards. I used
white oak
for my bed. Worked great.

the trex i used is 5/4''x 6'' lumber size, true size is 1''x 5.2''.
normal bed wood is 3/4'' and the bed strips are above the wood as wear
strips.
in other words; so your shovel wouldn't dig into the wood. (ouch)
the extra thickness allowed me to recess the bed strips and angles under
the top
of the trex decking.
this saves my painted strips and angles.
all my cuts were made on a table saw as shown in this picture

since the trex is only 5.2'' wide i used 9 boards and 8 strips, normal
wood is 8
boards and 7 strips.
they do sell trim boards that are .65''x 7.2'' but i thought they were a
little
flimsy and would need extra support
plus you need to cut the strips in almost a 1/4'', that would only leave
.4''
remaining thickness.
hd only carries gray trex around here, trex is available in 4 or 5 colors
but it
would depend on what is available locally

know this: trex is slippery stuff. i use a blanket or cardboard to keep
stuff
from sliding around.
otherwise, when you take off evrything slides back and when you brake
everything
slides forward.

Hi Ken,

Your truck bed looks superb! That trex should outlast the truck itself.
Would
you happen to have the part numbers of the bolts you bought from the Bolt
Depot?
My truck box did not come with any bolts for comparison sake so any help
in that
area is great
