Thanks for the great Idea Kurt. It looks real good in the picture! Think I'll give it a try. My 49 is more of a "freshen up" certainly not a restoration. I did send an email to the speedometer shop, but that looks like it will be way out of my league. Thanks again Allen "I'll get it back on the road or die trying"

To: old-chevy-truck@yahoogroups.com Date: Thursday, December 2, 2010, 11:55 AM allen i converted the amp gauge to a volt gauge in my 58 myself. i disassembled my amp gauge and unscrewed the bracket from the stock gauge. then i bought a 2'' voltmeter from a parts store, everything on the new gauge was riveted. i drilled out the rivets and drilled matching holes to the stock bracket. i removed the gauge face by drilling out more rivets, as i wanted to reuse stock gauge face. screwed the new gauge to the old bracket and test fitted everything. the voltmeter had a flat face and flat red needle, stock is offfset and white, so i cut off the amp needle and using a little jb weld (epoxy), glued the stock needle on the new voltmeter the stock ampmeter face has a center dot, D (discharge) and C (charge), the C and D are on the face plate and could not be changed. i set the new needle at 12v=center dot on gauge. key on, motor on, charging (14v); the needle is to the right of the dot. key on, motor off, headlights on; the needle barely moves to the left of the dot. key off, gauge off; the needle move all the way to the left. i used spraybomb black crinkle paint to paint the faceplate http://s306.photobucket.com/albums/nn255/_ogre/?action=view¤t=truck063.jpg i like the way it works and looks. plus i don't have the main feed to my fuse panel running thru my dash. while i had the gauge cluster out i replaced the front face plastic and all the bulbs. i'm not sure i ever had an old truck with all the dash lights working in it. i didn't even know they had turn and hi-beam inticators... i have a 59 panel that the ampmeter shorted out internaly and smoked the wires under my dash. Greetings Guys, I am thinking I would prefer a voltmeter in my 49 Chevy, stock dash. Has anyone ever come across a "drop-in " replacement for the amp-meter in the instrument cluster? I haven't seen one, but know there are a lot of resources that I don't know about. Thanks!
