Question: For lubrication can you remove/lube/reinstall the speedo cable from
the transmission side or is there some type of lip on the speedo side that
keeps the cable from sliding that direction?

Thanks,
Bob

Most of the time , this is caused by a dirty cable .

Tape the BIGGEST trash bag you can find , over the driver's portion of the seat
then reach up underneth the dash and unscrew the cable from the back of the
speedo and *gently* pull it out then down until the open end is visible under
the dash's lip , grasp the center part and withdraw it gently & carfully ,
it'll be _filthy_ with really nasty old grease & dirt , clean it well using
only lint free rags or paper towels , this will take some time to do properly .

If it's kinked or has even _one_ frayed bit , it's trash , go buy a new cable
center , they're very cheap or your local speedo shop will make you a new
center for $20 Max. if they're honest .

So , now you have either a Hospital Clean or brandy new center cable ?.

Good , go buy a tube of _Graphite_grease_ and no other kind , lay some clean
old towels on the floor mat and have more clean rags handy like draped on the
steering wheel or on the runing board , smear lots of grease on the end of the
cable and begin feeding it in the housing bit by bit , slathering on ever more
grease as the clean and dry part approaches the open housing . don't sweat the
mess , you _did_ remember the BIG trash bag and towels on the floor , right ? .

Once the cable is mostly in you'll prolly have to twirl it a little bit to get
the drive end to slip into the tranny .

It's all the way in so the tip is slightly recessed ? good , now wipe
off all the excess mess , raise it up to the back of the speedo and insert the
square drive part into the speedo , making sure it's in the hole as it's easy
to get it slightly off and snap it .

Clean up and marvel at how badly Graphite grease ruins upholstery if you
ignored my warning .

That's it , not a hard job , just *very* messy and filthy .

Crack a cold one or take the grandkids to lunch .
