I have said this before in this forum and I don't recall anyone telling
me that I was just totally off-base...the Kenwood KRC-3006 is the best
shaft-style you can get, period. It has not been manufactured new (by
Kenwood) in quite some time. It has been repo'd as the KNW 801 by
www.customautosound.com at a ridiculously high price of $289.

Buying new is probably preferable, given the amount of time that has
elapsed since the Kenwood-branded items were made new - However, that's
a tough $$ pill to swallow. I would personally not spend any money on
any "modern" shaft-style receiver other than a 3006 or clone of same (I
wouldn't buy a Sanyo).

A better bet may be to go with a retrofitted stock Oldmobile/Delco
shaft-mount radio and then mount a modern DIN-style receiver under the
dash in an 8-track housing. A retrofitted stock radio could provide
good radio reception and the DIN would provide the CD and iPod
functionality you seek. This is the most robust option, and also the
most expensive.
