Lighttpd usually runs it's workers as a non-root user, on OpenSolaris this is
'webservd' . It seems that image_science cannot access the library that was
created for it by RubyInline because the root users RubyInline cache directory
is not readable by the webservd user.

Lighttpd usually runs as a non-root user, on OpenSolaris this is 'webservd' .
It seems that image_science cannot access the library that was created for it
by RubyInline because the root users RubyInline cache directory is not readable
by the webservd user.
RubyInline either tries to install the libraries it builds in a directory
specified by the environment variable INLINEDIR or in if that isn't set, in
$HOME. The fastcgi.server directive in the lighttpd config allows you to
configure environment variables so it's possible to set INLINEDIR to a path
accessible by the non-root user used to run the lighttpd workers, this is set
in bin-environment section as follows:

In this example the non-root user would need to have write permissions on
/export/faban/olio_rails/olioapp/tmp".
