I've recently coordinated a maxed-out build of Gen7 N54L Microserver (my brother bought and assembled the parts) with 2*8gb ecc ram. Its main advantage is the ODD bay where you can mount 2.5" cradles for up to 6 small disks - laptop sized hdds or ssds, so that your big 3.5" disks are used only for the data pool. We went with raidz1 to maximize space (4*4tb hdds), but if you are not too constrained in this regard, raid10 should be better for reliability, efficiency and performance.
Also, our build ultimately connected all disk bays to an 8-port (2*4-port fanout cables) LSI card. Make sure to use half-height short cards, our first bet did not fit ;) Performance is not quite stellar due to the cpu, but decent. The SSDs (iirc mirrored Seagate 600 Pro with powerloss protection, at 120gb formatted to only use 100gb, for rpool and l2arc for metadata, zil is configured but stays empty) do rock :) So while we looked at hacking another bios as many users do to gain better control of the mobo sata ports, we had no reason to risk this so far - these ports are not currently used at all. I am thinking to use a similar server like Microserver Gen8. Searching in this mailing lists I see some threads about problems with this type of server. Any hardware recommendation?? I prefer to use HP or Lenovo boxes than to buy every component, but I accept all type of suggestions. Thanks. _______________________________________________ OmniOS-discuss mailing list OmniOS-discuss@lists.omniti.com http://lists.omniti.com/mailman/listinfo/omnios-discuss
