The reason people buy Broadcom is because it's cheaper... MUCH cheaper sometimes. Luckily, the Broadcom part mentioned by the original poster was a NetXreme I part, which is open-source-happy bge, AND already supported. It's not like he looked at a 5720 (two ports per chip, and mostly working, but not yet integrated) or 5719 (four ports per chip, and has Real Problems from what I've seen and tested). The original poster could go with the specific Broadcom board he found and would be fine. I mentioned the I350 for completeness and paranoia.
