I suspect Phelps went easier than he should have in his first race last Saturday, in part because he undercompensated, in part because he was partying, or taking a bath, until late Friday. This really did give more hope to the rest of the swim team, though, seeing Lochte beat him in the first race. So planned or unplanned, it had a good effect. I am sure Lochte did not let him win to even up the score. LOL
