Actually, as far as I know, we are not planning on continuing the
sponsor process after the gate is outside the firewall.

I think you might be confusing mentoring with sponsoring. We currently
provide mentoring for internal folks, who can do their own putback but
will likely have a lot of questions along the way. The sponsor process
is just so folks who can't currently type "putback" can actually still
contribute. :)

Now we may decide that after we no longer have "sponsors" that we want
to set up a more "official" mentoring program to make it more accessible
to those outside of the company. Currently, we often find our mentors
by talking to someone else on our team or down the hall - clearly,
a nonstarter for external folks. In general, I think that the interest
aliases, like network-discuss or security-discuss, can serve that purpose,
but I would be open to something else.

For example, right now sponsors have to be Sun employees - in the future,
I would hope that non Sun employees may be even able to mentor a new
Sun employee to help them get started in ON.

This conversation (above) had turned into wondering why we don't just
take diffs & integrate them w/out all the process we currently require
in ON. (ON being the consolidation with the most burdensome processes,
as far as I can tell).
