My name is Sylvain Desbureaux and I’m appointed by ONAP [1] as “CNCF coordinator”. ONAP is a project hosted by Linux Foundation Network and its goal is to deliver an orchestrator to deploy and manage xNF (network functions, a.k.a routers, firewall, DPI, IMS), x being P (Physical), V (Virtual) or C (Cloud Native). I see (at least) two domains where we could work together: 1./ Since 2 releases, ONAP is able to deploy CNF on Kubernetes using Helm packages. We also know that cnf-testbed [2] is a way to showcase deployment of CNF on Kubernetes. I think it would good for the two communities to join their efforts on this project by working first on an alignment of the deployment of Kubernetes and its associated addons. My proposal is then to setup a meeting where both teams (ONAP people who have created the Kubernetes deployment for CNF anf CNF-testbed guys) show their choices in order to see how we can hopefully converge. Once it would be done, we could go further (we have automatic deployment and tests on ONAP side and we could re-use all of this to showcase some CNF). 2./ ONAP is also being deployed on Kubernetes as of today [3] but we’re on the beginning of the trailmap [4]. We have plans to become more and more cloud native and I think it would be interesting for both communities to demonstrate that a big “legacy” project such as ONAP (a full ONAP deployment uses ~300 PODs, 7 types of databases, Kafka, …) can also move to a “full” cloud native solution. My proposal there is to share our current issues (logging, deployment dependencies, centralized security, move to service mesh, continuous deployment, …) and work with projects hosted by CNCF (Prometheus, fluentd, jaeger, envoy, vitess, nats, falco, …) in order to solve them. Obviously, we may need “introduction talks” from you to start such fruitful collaboration. What is your position on these proposals?
