That was my recommendation as well, in the previous thread referenced
above.  It is more work up front

To make it clear once again: this is possible with the current Extensions website and it has always been possible. Some extensions listed on extensions.services.openoffice.org are hosted on SourceForge and downloaded from there, for example.
