I agree, but it's easier to remember diacritics than remembering shortcut keys. The real solution is an extended keyboard with about 500 keys. :-)

You can achieve this with the AutoCorrect Options
e.g.
Replace "e with ë
Replace `e with è
Replace ^e with ê
etc.
