That is not correct: .DOC format was opened before/during the OOXML debacle as no further development was to take place on it. Most was known through reverse engineering anyway. .DOCX format as part of OOXML had a extremely large spec released for it (see Ecma 376). However there are three versions of OOXML. The 1st Edition that Microsoft and Ecma (initially as Microsoft sock puppets) offered to ISO/IEC for standardisation and is deprecated. The 2nd Edition which AFAIK has not been implemented by any Office software is the standard ISO/IEC 29500. The 3rd Edition is also not implemented. Both Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 use the 1st Edition. Information on this format is well available, however embedded objects especially of the Microsoft variety may well be in closed formats.
