I like the shortest version of file extensions possible so I say +1 to
Chip's suggestion as well.

like, but an attempt to get at unique filetypes that one can then use to
associate icons with filetypes.

Thanks, this matches with Chip's thoughts, and as long as no others step
forward to favor longer filetypes (with a sensible reason), I would tend
to use ".rxj" (BSF4Rexx-scripts) and ".rxjo" (OpenOffice-scripts).

No, BSF4Rexx scripts are plain Rexx scripts. They require the
BSF4Rexx-library which bridges between Rexx and Java. For ooRexx there
is additional support in form of the Rexx module "BSF.CLS" which
camouflages Java as ooRexx, such that one is able to send ooRexx style
messages to Java objects.
