A recent discussion on RFE 715 led to the question of whether or not ooRexx 4.2.0 and 5.0.0 could coexist on a system.  I am starting this thread to hopefully expose the discussion to a larger audience.  As my experience is restricted to Windows systems, I am restricting the subject to that environment but the question certainly applies to non-Windows systems as well.  Anyone with expertise in those environments should start a parallel thread to extend the discussion to them as well.

I guess the first question that comes to mind is why one would want to have both 4.2 and 5.0 on their system at the same time. One scenario that comes to mind is the case where a system is being used in a production environment using 4.2 but there is interest in moving to 5.0 when it becomes GA.  So having the ability to test the production programs under 5.0 before that while still running the 4.2 production programs would be beneficial and accelerate the time to needed to make the transition once 5.0 goes GA.  I'm sure there are other cases as well and I would be happy to hear them.

So the simple answer to the question was provided by Rick: "Actually, with the changes to how rxapi communicates in 5.0.0, they coexist quite nicely. They can both be active at one time." As always, the devil is in the details!  I'll get into those details in the next post.
