This is still the best bet, or maybe VC++ 2010. I should have told you not
to try Windows 8 SDK or VC++ 2012.

Well, I just looked and VC++ 2010 is probably what you need. The Windows
SDKs used to include a linker, but 7.1 does not anymore.
VC++ 2010 should work fine.
The Resedit problem can be fixed by making sure the right includes are
done. I'll have to look up what is needed.
