Yes, compiling a complete list of modes in use could be the biggest problem if one wants to avoid the overkill of 60 pairs of pins. There could be, say, 8 pair, giving multi-sync, use-software-mode, and 254 fixed-freq modes. If the OGC has that plus a rs-232 port, it should reduce the catch-22 up-a-creek cases to nearly zero.
