Actually, this is the way that all open source drivers that rely on
proprietary information work. They are based on a binary library to
interface the hardware.
What matters in this case is if the API for the binary library is fully
documented. If so, and the binary library provides access to all of the
features of the hardware, the result is the same -- it is just that the
open source driver is using a proprietary hardware abstraction layer.
Epson has done the same thing with their drivers.
