501(c)(3) status is not particularly difficult to qualify for. There are
very few requirements, except that it must be 1) non-profit and
2) non-political (which means only that they can't promote political
candidates or parties -- it's perfectly legit to promote political
causes or issues).
The paperwork is a formality.
However, it's a great opportunity for a good vision statement which
has defining value to the organization beyond being merely
a tax document.
I think Timothy's bullet points are great. I can't really think of
any improvements on them.
