Actually, if you copy-paste code that someone else wrote, that other
person still has copyright, and the GPL does require that you place a
copyright notice listing that person as a copyright holder, along with
the note that it is GPLed.

Yes, indeed.  And so I think we're going to have to go with Mark
Baker's suggestions.
