What are consortia using to package books for shipping? Please share your
experiences with packaging shipments. We would greatly appreciate it.
Size?
Durability?
Material?
What has worked for?
What hasn't worked?
NC Cardinal started resource sharing with our libraries - now 16 systems - in
February of this year. We currently use tear-proof polyethylene bags to ship
books among the systems. They are 14x17 and for one-time use only. The bags
look like this, http://www.uline.com/BL_1551/Tear-Proof-Polyethylene-Mailers,
only without the collared shirt. In 5+ months of resource sharing, we haven't
received any reports of damaged books.
However, we are exploring other options, especially because we think we'd like
reusable packaging.

Indiana has an established resource sharing mechanism (INfoExpress). We use
something similar to these http://www.bagproducts.com/CB04.html.
They're a durable nylon with zipper. Some of them are over a decade old (you
can tell because the old resource sharing mechanism is branded on them). The
zippers are held closed by a zip tie that runs through a grommet. We also
prepare whatever materials to minimize damage. A/V materials get an extra
layer of padding (cardboard, bubble-wrap or the
like) and books get rubberbanded. We've experienced only rare instances of
damage generally associated with moisture. Although the body of the bags are
waterproof/resistant, there is access for water at the grommet.

Really appreciate this Jim!
I was thinking in general this was the direction to go, but wasn't quite
sure the practical usage of it--or how to put it into practice. Your
explanations helped a lot (I'm editing in Vi as I speak...).
I wonder if this could be put into the official documentation? For
non-developers, or maybe it's just me, this level of explanation really
helps to explain the inner-workings of the system.
