Job Title: IT - Systems Administrator IV

Minneapolis, MN.

6 Month

 

Department:The Operations Department for company website is responsible for 
three different areas:

Site Reliability

Release/Change Management

Infrastructure (Public Cloud and Data Center)

Our group (Infrastructure - Data Center) is a growing team of four that is 
helping to standardize the way the infrastructure in the data center is 
currently 
built, configured, and monitored for the company website.

 

 

Project Description:Work to define standards and implement Opscode Chef across 
all environments.  Gone are the old days of manually configuring applications 
and having different configurations per server.

 

 

The ideal candidate will:

1.       Already be implementing the latest technology and will not be stuck 
on the old ways of managing infrastructure

2.       Be able to work without supervision (finding the next thing to improve 
and doing the work)

3.       Able to create properly configured infrastructure (Apache/Tomcat, 
Monitoring, etc) without having to be told the correct settings to use (Best 
practices)

4.       Able to quickly diagnose infrastructure problems and resolve issues 


 

 

Responsibilities:

Managing, automating, testing, deploying the infrastructure.  The team is 
heavily 
invested in Opscode Chef.  All components of the infrastructure will be 
configured 
using Chef.  

Manage a multi-origin, zero-downtime, highly scalable web infrastructure.
- Build, scale, and secure infrastructure, focusing specifically on a fully 
automated Linux environment
- Design, develop and improve automation and tools for systems management, 
including development of scripts for our fully automated environment with 
Opscode 
Chef
- Lead efforts on introducing new technologies into the environment that adhere 
to our operational best practices.

Automating and Standardizing Infrastructure

 

Typical Day:

90% work (Creating/Testing/Deploying Chef Cookbooks, Defining Standards, 
Working 
with Vendors).

10% meetings

 

MUST have skills and technologies:

- 5 or more years of experience with Linux systems administration (Kernel 
Tuning, 
Application Tuning, Standard Administration)
- 5 or more years of experience implementing technologies such as: Apache w/ 
mod_jk, Tomcat/JBoss, (Graphite, Ganglia, Nagios or similar)
- 3 or more years' experience with scripting languages (Ruby, Perl, Python)
- 3 or more years' experience with emerging web technologies
- 3 or more years' experience with Git or SVN
- Experience with Virtualization (VMWare) and physical hardware
- Experience with Cobbler/Kickstart/PXE booting
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Good verbal and written communication 
- Prior experience in a fast-paced environment
- Experience working in large environments with many moving pieces
- Experience with configuration management tools (Chef/Puppet)
- Local candidates preferred. Work has already started. 

- Self Starter.  Ability to work without supervision.
