Summary: Makefiles don't honour DESTDIR variable

Initial Comment:
Hiya,

Most modern makefiles support a DESTDIR variable that allows the make install
process to be put in a separate subdirectory (rather than just in /). This
feature's not very common, but is used a lot by Gentoo to allow for
installation into a sandbox before merging with the file system proper.

Attached is a patch to fix the automake files to make use of the DESTDIR
variable. The Makefile.in files will need regenerating after the Makefile.am
files have been patched.

Let me know if there's any issues with it or anything doesn't make sense and
I'll be happy to help fix it up... 5:)

Hi Mike,

Thank you for that patch. I have created a similar in house fix for
this. I will incorporate your changes with mine. Hopefully the changes will
make it into the next tools refresh.
