Usually this means the macro was only invoked conditionally. If you look further into configure.ac you'll see that AC_PROG_CXX is already invoked in the case where icu is enabled. If icu is disabled (which it is in your case) we shouldn't need the C++ compiler/linker, and so we shouldn't require it for all open-vm-tools builds. That's why it's surprising to see this failure. When I run your ./configure line locally (after removing my /usr/bin/g++ symlink) I don't see this problem. Could you share your config.log file?
