I think that's right. I'm also having some trouble on an ESXi host
with the vmxnet module. I also rebuilt the lucid vm (using kickstart btw)
and only installed open-vm-dkms with no more luck. The net seems
up but I'm not getting DNS resolution.

Next would probably be to build from source.

Any open-vm-tools developers using ubuntu? If so you can easily test
lucid using testdrive:
