I had just thinking of something in between: what if I manually adjust
the source code of the Ubuntu package 'open-vm-dkms' to contain the
VMware provided OSP code? Then install that packages onto all my VMs,
and any subsequent kernel updates will trigger (via dkms) a module
rebuild with the proper tools.

This must be what the tools team decide to not do, I wonder how
feasible this is.

Thanks!
