Hmm... I was using vmware-user& in .xinitrc, so the fact I shouldn't be doing it comes as a surprise :) In any case, to clarify, I should execute vmware-user-suid-wrapper before vmtoolsd gets started? I'm asking because the open-vm-tools daemon initiates vmtoolsd, so unless I remove the daemon, I have no chance to do as you suggest.
