Alyson, There are no conf file changes required for open-vm-tools. Setting the configuration you have mentioned will confuse the host. So, it is not a good idea. We are working on fixing "3rd Party/Independent". In fact, your should see a different status if you run vSphere 6.0.

For RHEL7 however, we are now being asked to use open-vm-tools, which is perfectly fine and works well. Is there a conf file I can update that will remove the 3rd Party/Independent from the VM console? Is it as simple as adding a tools.conf file?
