instead of all these workarounds for the real problem lets just fix the 
real problem.  why is strings.h needed?  what functions need converted to
'ansi'?  rindex(), index(), bcopy(), bcmp(), bzero()?  does any system
supported by afs (or will be supported by afs) not have ansi support?
