I see this as more of a general purpose than an amanda-specific feature. It's a "If I vos dump this volume now, how big will the resulting dump file be?" feature. Any backup system that uses vos dump to backup AFS will be able to use it.
I have apparently taken this thread out of context, because I did not realize you were using 'vos dump' with Amanda. I was under the assumption that you were going to add the 'vos size' parameter for an estimate prior to using the normal butc/backup system to dump the volume data to Amanda. I was mistaken.
If this feature is simply another tool in the vos suite, I am in agreement that it is not specific to any one backup environment.
