under Jaguar and 1.2.10, you can use the -nomount option and the text or gui mountafs (search port-darwin archives) to allow people to start up afs when disconnected. There is also a patch file for the startup script which assures that openafs is running (so that you can then mount it when finally connected to the network).
With the above, haven't seen any crashes.

We're looking to provide AFS connectivity for Mac OSX laptops. The problem we're seeing now is that when using Openafs v1.2.11, the OS crashes when the machine is disconnected from the network. Also - the client isn't running when I log into a machine which isn't connected to the network.
Has anyone dealt with this issue yet? If so, where can I get more info about it?
