I tested 1.3.87 on this hardware with 2 newer, stock kernels: 2.6.12 and
2.6.13-rc3.  2.6.12 still crashed, though not as quickly (sorry, didn't
copy down traces).  I haven't been able to crash 2.6.13-rc6 yet.  Both
kernels had NUMA enabled.  I put config-2.6.13-rc6 and dmesg-2.6.13-rc6
in /afs/athena.mit.edu/user/a/r/arolfe/afs-bugs in case that's helpful
to anyone.
