A script is used to generate releases, not make dist. It does its own checkout based on tags.
autotools. I think autoconf-2.59 and autmake-1.9 seem particularly modern, stable, and mostly bug-free.
grand.central.org is the machine that matters, since it hosts the aforementioned script.... and it's aging.
