What is the likelihood in the future that 1.6.2 (or just the applied patch update) will be available in Wheezy and/or backports? Are we talking months or years? I don't think building from source will be an issue, but having it in the repo would definitely help in the future.

So if we stay with squeeze, our only option is to build from source with
the necessary patch in place?
I'm afraid so. Only packages that are in wheezy are eligible for
backports.debian.org, and wheezy has a stock 1.6.1. The patch hasn't been
in any released version of OpenAFS, and I haven't updated any of the
packaging since the 1.6.1 release.
