I would suggest "\ls -f". In extreme cases on some Linux distributions
you may need "LS_COLORS= \ls -f" (one might not think this is needed,
but some of them are a bit over the top).

(The rest of this makes me think yet again of *BSD's control-T. I wonder
if that's hookable.)
