A proposed enhancement is now available in 12977. Both review and actual testing would be most helpful. Another issue: Your autoconf refactoring changes (12876..12878 as merged onto 1.8.x) are certainly a good thing, but backporting them to 1.6 is not quite trivial. On the other hand, it's probably now or never.
