Perhaps it is of interest that I have a similar problem without any vpn on my local network :(. I start the 1.3.77 or the cvs-server with 1.3.77 client (or cvs client) and everything works, when copying many files (my audio path for example) or starting KDE with a Homedir inside afs the client hangs...
