Server works too. Both server and client have been running on my machine for more than 2 monthes now. Currently running OpenAFS 1.3.79 on 2.6.11-gentoo-r2.
The same bugzilla entry contains a dirty patch that loads the module and starts afs automatically. You may prefer rc-scripts, shutting down afs is much cleaner than just killing it. Haven't had time to produce a clean patch though, and it's not really a priority for me, it just works.
