famd should be familiar with the idea that it cannot read a file.
are you using a disk cache?  if so, try a memcache.

memcache doesn't help matters. (wrt to famd anyway.)

We disabled famd on our Debian workstations and almost all AFS related problems went away nearly immediately.

I have not had any users complain about missing features due to lack of famd support. (Doesn't mean it didn't happen, just that no one told me about it.)
