I only have one machine to test this on.

I have some familiarity with Linux and the client server model so its
not that bad. I essentially cannot mount the user volumes. I would like
to understand why.

These are some funny entries in the protection database. I am not sure
that this should be as it is:

-bash-2.05b$ pts listentries

The -204 and 32766 entries are weird.

It sounds like you are setting up AFS for the first time. So, one  
suggestion is: install the server (and not the client) on one system,  
and install only the client on another system.

Then, you'll get a better sense of what the server does, and what the  
client does.

There's a pretty steep learning curve initially, so you want to make  
it as non-confusing as possible.
