I've created (yet another) mirror of OpenBabel on github at http://github.com/baoilleach/openbabel-svn-mirror. It has a vendor branch that is updated nightly via a cronjob. The idea is that you work off your local master branch (or another of your choosing). When you want to update with the latest SVN changes you pull from the github vendor branch to your local vendor branch, and then merge that onto your working branch. Whatever you do, you should not edit your local vendor branch.
