You don't mention chemistry experience, which would certainly be needed for
this project.
Nevertheless, the first step would be to get familiar with Open Babel. There
are a wide variety of issues - many good places to start for newcomers.

Why don't you look through, find something that looks easy, and submit a pull
request. That's always my suggestion for where to start.
