I am having the same issue. I added the mySQL param cacheResultSetMetadata=false but it did not resolve it, this works fine on my dev copy of open BD installed a few months ago. The difference I noticed between the xml fiels was the driver name, the one that works is <drivername>org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver</drivername> the one that errors is <drivername>com.mysql.jdbc.Driver</drivername>
