Perhaps I'm confused as I'm still on cup #1 ;-)

I thought you said that when declaring as nvarchar when the column is actually 
varchar you see a CPU spike, but when you "properly" declared the the variable 
as varchar you didn't see the issue.

So I'd say declare it properly and all is well (and as it should be).

Like I said....maybe I missed the point, but that was the impression I got from 
your post....and perhaps that explains the lack of response ;-)
