Is your Ubuntu installation a "headless" one (ie no provisions installed for local graphics display)? You could be missing some of the Linux packages needed to generate the imagery.

If so, check the blogosphere for talk of terms like "headless" and the addition of params like '-Djava.awt.headless=true" into your startup sh file.

The problem also pops up when using other image manip stuff like imagecfc
