It is worth pointing out that whilst GPL is the "purest" open source license, it is also the one that causes commercial companies the most grief - they prefer more "permissive" licenses like Apache.
Which of course makes sense, as it is companies that wish to profit from others work without any of the fuss, of like, paying!
At aw2.0 we do not sell any license for OpenBD; we do not need to sell or profit from OpenBD to stay in business. OpenBD is just but one tool in our arsenal that lets us deliver high-end cloud computing solutions.
So for us, we want others to use, contribute and share our work, and any changes they make to come back to us so we can all use, contribute and share, and so on. You see the circle.
We do not want people taking our engine and profiting from it directly. That is like the kid at the party that never shares his toys. Its just not fair to anyone else.
We however do want people to use our engine to build CFML solutions, and profit from them. Make millions. Make thousands, and now due to open source solutions, make hundreds or even a few pounds/euros/dollars. No huge license cost to factor in.
But if you can make the CFML engine better, then everyone should benefit from that innovation.
@Den: you sparked a conversation there! lol .. i hope you are coming to the Open CFSummit in Feb.
